Water Efficiency: Our Water Footprint

Our strategic network of manufacturing facilities crosses the United States. Each one has its own specialty, as well as challenges and opportunities. All are strongly committed to innovation and sustainability. Currently GAF is baselining its complete water footprint and will establish a 2030 water efficiency goal in 2022.

GAF has led major water conservation projects across our plant network, including efforts in our Shafter, California, shingle and mat plants; our Mt. Vernon, Indiana, shingle and modbit plant; and our Tampa, Florida, shingle plant.

In our Shafter plants, we developed a new process which resulted in a 100% closed loop water system that repurposes over 5 million gallons of processed water annually from the reverse osmosis water purification system, essentially resulting in zero waste water discharge from the plant. The implementation of the new system also reduced our overall water consumption by an average of 194,000 gallons per month.

Similar to efforts in Shafter, our Mt. Vernon shingle and modbit plant and our Tampa shingle plant have developed partial and fully closed loop wastewater systems, respectively. These efforts have enabled GAF to reduce its cooling water use by up to 15% in Mt. Vernon and recirculate our cooling water for reuse to help work towards a zero discharge plan in Tampa.
