Product Circularity: Closing the Loop on Shingle Waste
About 75% of U.S. roofs are asphalt and each year millions of torn off asphalt shingles end up in landfills. Closing the loop on shingle waste and diverting used shingles from landfills is a transformative opportunity for our industry and one GAF is proud to be leading.
We have the roofing industry’s first, patented process to reclaim 90% of shingle waste, repurposing it into new recycled content shingles.
As a result of this innovation, we’re committing to diverting 1 million tons of asphalt shingles from landfills each year and incorporating recycled asphalt content into all GAF shingle products by 2030. GAF has also committed to donating enough recycled asphalt shingles to reroof 500 homes with its nonprofit partners.
A Roof Like No Other.
In partnership with Habitat for Humanity, GAF installed the first recycled asphalt shingle roof in April 2022 on the home of Horace Montgomery, a military veteran, and his son Carl, also a veteran. The home has been in the family for more than 50 years and was in great need of a roof replacement. The work was required by the home insurance company, but the family were unable to afford the expense, leaving the residence uninsured and in need of critical repairs. GAF donated all of the materials needed for the Montgomery family’s new roof, including the recycled asphalt shingles.

One of the biggest contributors to our footprint is the products, goods and services we purchase to manufacture our products. This includes asphalt, a raw material derived from fossil fuels. A critical way we are working to address that is by scaling access to our patented recycled asphalt shingles. By increasing the amount of recycled asphalt used in shingles - and other building products - we can begin to reduce the amount of virgin asphalt needed in construction.
Building in Solutions.
In June 2022, we announced Texas as the home of the first commercial-scale asphalt shingle recycling operation with facilities in Corsicana and Ennis. These facilities will divert 300,000 tons of shingle waste from landfills annually with enough recycled asphalt briquettes to produce shingles containing recycled content for more than 660,000 homes each year. It marks an important point of progress in our journey.
