Product Transparency: Trust but Verify
By 2030, GAF plans to have environmental product declarations (EPDs) complete for 100% of the core product portfolio. In an effort to achieve this, we are conducting lifecycle assessments across our entire product portfolio, from commercial to residential.
Product transparency is essential for understanding our impact and providing customers and partners with the information they need to make good, sustainable choices. Lifecycle assessments help us evaluate the environmental impacts of a product's life cycle from raw material extraction to end of life.
These assessments will then be used to evaluate and identify "hot spots" across the product lifecycle. This level of information helps us make more informed decisions on how to most efficiently use resources and in turn reduce environmental impact.
TPO Gets the Green Circle Recycled Content Certification
GAF is the only company in the roofing sector to have certified recycled content across TPO (4-5%) and PVC (1-7%) products. The ISO line of products also achieved third party certification for recycled content (13-42%). For decades, our thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) plants have been committed to recycling or reusing as much of their waste as possible. TPO—a roofing material for low slope and flat roofs—is a significant product for us at GAF, so these efforts make a big impact. We recently decided to pursue a recycled content certification for our TPO products through a third party, Green Circle Certified. Of the total material in our TPO products, 4-5% is reused. While that might seem small, we’re able to put most of the scrap that we generate back into the process, so that 4-5% represents tons of saved scrap that goes right back into our products.
Obtaining the TPO Recycled Content and Waste Diversion Certifications highlights the positive moves we have made to reduce waste and also gives us a baseline to get even better.
